Just finished watching last night’s episode, and here are my thoughts:
Liked
- How amazing this cast is. Kudos for bringing back Kate Vernon, who is just phenomenal. Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) acted his socks off in this one, as did James Callis (Baltar). And of course the awesome duo of Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, who are breaking my heart into a million pieces.
- Chief’s rant about settling with what you have. It’s a discussion question I want to bring up at some point, but it is about time that someone stands up and says that this isn’t how they pictured their life to turn out, and they’re not happy about it.
- That we’re finally letting Saul deal with the fact that he killed his wife because she was colluding with the Cylons, and now he finds out he is a Cylon. It’s about time we get to see how much this screws with his head.
- Special effects with the Raptor crashing were just stunning.
Disliked
- Roslin telling Baltar that she doesn’t care what’s going on anymore really because she’s dying, and then fights so hard to pass a law just against him. I could understand if she was doing this to play games with him, but that’s not how it felt.
- Cylons act crazy when it comes to emotions; we got it. I’ve had enough of Tory being just bizarre and Six flipping emotions with every breath she takes. We’ve had this for four seasons now, and while it sometimes works and helps with the story, I just feel like we’ve been beat over the head with it so far this season.
- There are no closed caption options when you watch it online.
- That we didn’t get a glimpse into a religious service until now.
- How is it that the guards didn’t notice how awkwardly Baltar was standing when Head!Six (the Six in his head) was holding up his body and making him walk towards the door? Why haven’t there been more people notice his odd body movements and the constant talking to himself?
- Not enough time spent on the Demetrius. I’m not saying this because I think the secondary characters are great on this show–because I do think that–but because we’ve invested so much time in the first two episodes of the season with the four secret Cylons trying to figure out what they’re going to do that now I feel like Anders really hasn’t had a say in the last couple of shows. This week was all about the big bombs dropping down on these four characters and how they’re going to deal with (for Saul and Chief anyway) losing the loves of their lives because they were associated with the Cylons and now they find out they’re toasters, and how is that going to affect them? I don’t mind at all the storyline of those two men. I do mind that we’re spending a ton of time (at least it feels like that) with Tory, whom we weren’t really invested in at all previous to this season. Instead I think we should be focusing on Anders, who fought in a resistance against the Cylons at two different points on two different planets and has a wife that told him point blank, “If you were a Cylon, I’d put a bullet between your eyes.” How is that a less interesting story than Tory shutting down all her emotions except the horny ones?
Questions I Now Have:
- Was Adama lying when he said that he hadn’t read the book past that point or was he just lying about what was on the page? You can see him close the book, and then he reads another handful sentences. Did he quickly memorize the words? Or was he (possibly again) relying on the book to talk for him with regards about how he feels about Laura?
- Why did Head!Six look towards Tory in the last split second?
Comments
I think he made it up and here’s why - earlier when he says he’s saving it, she jumps in and says “Maybe I should do that,” before Bill give her that heartbreaking look. I think he was trying to save the book with the hope they could finish it together on Earth.
Eddie and Mary are so amazing and if they don’t get nominated this year for Emmys . . . I’ll do something drastic . . . maybe
Saul/Six isn’t as crazy as the Boomer/Cavil yuck-fest. I don’t know why but I kinda get it. Six is attracted to broken men I think, she wants to save people.
PS - Lee needs to get Airlocked . . . just saying.
Nice review! I like your comments. I must say, I am also weirded about by the pairings popping up all over. Boomer/Cavil (*shiver*) and Saul/Six? It’s just all so WRONG. But it makes for good - if somewhat disturbing - entertainment. I love your blog, my friend!
