One Will Be Revealed – Discussion Question

Alright folks, it’s the discussion question you’ve been waiting for: Who is the Final Cylon?

Being the devoted fans we are to the show, there are all kinds of theories out there about this person’s identity (I’ve even heard some ideas of it not being a person). But being the scientist I am, I need data. So here’s what we know so far:

  • According to Leoben, “Adama” is a Cylon. But this could very well have been him frakking with Starbuck’s mind. (“Flesh and Bone”)
  • D’Anna knows the identity of the Final Five. One of the faces was so shocking for her to see that she apologized to them, possibly for actions she took against them. Was this the unnamed Cylon? Was it Saul for being tortured and losing an eye on New Caprica? Was it to Anders, whom she nearly killed on Caprica? (“Rapture”)
  • The other seven models have been programmed not to think about the identities of the other five. The Raiders won’t fire on the remaining five models. (“He That Believeth in Me”)
  • There have been two hybrid monologues with mentions of the Final Cylon. The first from “Razor”: “Soon there will be four, glorious in awakening, struggling with the knowledge of their true selves. The pain of revelation bringing new clarity and in the midst of confusion, he will find her. Enemies brought together by impossible longing. Enemies now joined as one. The way forward at once unthinkable, yet inevitable. And the fifth, still in shadow, will claw toward the light, hungering for redemption that will only come in the howl of terrible suffering.” And the second from “Faith”: “Thus it will come to pass. The dying leader will know the truth of the opera house. The missing Three will give you the Five, who have come from the home of the thirteenth.”
  • There is this Season 4 promo image of a BSG version of “The Last Supper”. According to Ron Moore, everyone was specifically placed to tell subtle messages about things going on. According to Aaron Douglas and Katee Sackhoff, there are no secret messages in the picture. But if you believe Ron, there is an empty seat for the Final Cylon, which means if the character is already visible in the picture, then they’re not the Final Cylon.

So what does this all mean? Well, let me share my personal thoughts on the matter.

Who I do not think it is going to be: Laura Roslin, Kara Thrace, William Adama, Lee Adama, or Gaius Baltar. I’m almost willing to add in Zak Adama to the list, but part of me wonders if Lee’s little speech in the season opener regarding Zak wasn’t foreshadowing, so we’ll leave him off for now. But for the other five, it’s just too obvious. I do believe that some of them, namely Laura and Kara, have special roles, but I do not believe being the Final Cylon is one of them. I also know that it won’t be Cally or Helo, or else our hybrid babies wouldn’t really be hybrid babies now would they?

Who I think it is: I have two thoughts. The first is Dualla. She married Apollo, which would make her an Adama. Also in “Valley of Darkness”, when Centurions invaded Galactica, Apollo and his hunting party found the aftermath of a firefight. Dee was the only one conscious, if not the sole survivor. Her only injury was a concussion, which could very well have been the result of someone from the Colonial side of the fighting, if not herself. And if the Raiders won’t fire on the Final Five, it’s possible that Centurions won’t either. But here’s the problem with this theory: we’ve seen Centurions fire on members of the Final Five before. Granted they’ve all survived to this point, but that doesn’t mean the Centurions were intentionally letting them live.

My other idea is Gaeta. He was certainly howling in terrible pain in the last episode. Also, he was a member of the resistance on New Caprica, like the other final models. He’s also found himself entrenched in technological events relating to Cylons, such as Baltar’s test and the Cylon virus. But all of this could just be coincidence and mean nothing at all.

So here’s my question to all of you: Who do you think the Final Cylon is? And since I’m a teacher, I’m going to have to ask you to explain your answer.

I’ve suspected Dualla since Season One– sorry, teacher I have no explaination other than intuition.

Unfortunately, since I read your ‘data’ the hybrid monologues sound an awful lot like it could be Starbuck.

I’m still holding onto my Dualla card, though.

One of the theories being bandied about lately is Zarek. I waffle every week on who I think the final cylon is, but I like him right now.

Also, he participated in the first cylon wars along with Tigh. Zarek fought under a different name and was a viper pilot… ;)

All kidding aside, I kinda like Zarek. I was in the Dualla camp for a while. Gaeta looked good at one point…

In truth, I’m sure I’m going to be surprised in any case.

RM said ( supposedly ) that the final cylon has been on show from the beginning.

How about Doc Cottle he’s about Sol’s age , and Dualla and Gaeta have also been on since the beginning also and they are all not in Last Supper Photo ??

Zarek character joined late in first season and I agree that Laura and Starbuck have special roles.

And yet Helo has also been on since the beginning and it would be a nice turn of events to bring things full circle that one of the Hybrid Children is not a hybrid but a culmination of the Cylon dream, But not of thier own making

Wow. I hadn’t thought about that from a literary stand-point, Mr Ed. The “culmination of the Cylon dream” indeed! I wonder what that would mean from a military standpoint, though. *scratchs chin* Depending on who wins out in the Cylon civil war, it could mean complete annialation for the humans (with no further reservations) or being left completely alone.

Gaeta’s a good choice. He’s uncommonly bright and gifted, and he’s near the rose but not the rose. Note that none of the cylon models have been put in positions of absolute power, but they get very close to it: Caprica Six, Gina Six on Pegasus, Colonel Tigh. Gaeta fits this standard cylon tactic. His singing in the most recent episode raises suspicion, especially when Anders notes it. If you analyze the “poetry” of his song, however, you get a different answer.

    He sings:
Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man, With my three wishes clutched in her hand

The first that she be spared the pain, That comes from a dark and laughing reign,

When she finds love may it always stay true, This I beg for the second wish I made too

But wish no more, My life you can take, To have her please just one day wake.

(Many people are writing the line as “laughing rain,” but the closed captioning spells it “reign”. If “reign”, this clearly points to Roslyn.)

This little poem is not too difficult to analyze. The first line refers to a female cylon model. “In the shirt of man” means skin over mechanics. The only female cylon “sleeping” is D’Anna, if you read “sleep” literally.

However, the sleeping cylon could also refer to the last, unrevealed model, who herself is not fully aware of her status. So, “Alone she sleeps in the shirt of man” could refer to Starbuck or Roslyn as the final cylon. At least we assume she’s female based on this song. This would make 5 females and 7 males.

I don’t think it’s Roslyn: Her prophetic dreams are linked to both Chamalla and the infusion of Hera’s blood. But she was the only “non-cylon” involved in that dream sequence. The other dreamers were cylon or half-cylon. Note that none of the four hiders had the dream.

But how would Gaeta know about the sleeper unless he was the spare? The song’s obviously made to sound like an old lyric, a folk song filled with myth and fiction, so it could be lyric as in an epic poem. The song clearly identifies a woman. If Gaeta is lamenting D’anna, then Gaeta is the 12th cylon.

Now, BSG is good at putting out crumbs, but also at surprising us. Based on D’Anna’s apology to the fifth cylon, we can assume she did it some wrong in the past, pointing to Starbuck (whom she nearly killed over the golden arrow), or Roslyn. Not Gaeta, with whom I don’t think she ever interacted.

This is of course all depending on the “fact” that we “know” the four are cylon. Nothing’s been proven to me there. They believe it, but they could have all been implanted with cylon chips to make them think that, while they were on New Caprica. We’ve seen little exterior proof. My money’s on BSG pulling something really weird, like there’s a baker’s dozen, or the four are not the ones we think. After all, the only information we have that the humanoid cylons number 12 is from a very unreliable source, Gauis via Imaginary Six.
